Moving from Active Directory to Entra ID without losing control of identity

Separate identity authority, authentication, device management, and application dependencies before migration. A phased plan should prove access and recovery for each group of users before expanding.

Define the destination and the dependencies

Moving identity toward Entra ID involves several decisions that are easy to collapse into one project label. Where is the user account mastered? How does authentication work? How is the device managed? Which applications still depend on Active Directory? I would answer those questions separately before choosing a migration schedule.

A hybrid design can preserve on-premises directory dependencies while enabling cloud access and management. A cloud-first design reduces those dependencies as applications, devices, and operating processes become ready. The right destination depends on the estate the organization can actually operate. Entra ID is not a direct replacement for every AD DS service, and synchronizing accounts does not remove applications’ LDAP, Kerberos, domain-join, or Group Policy dependencies.

Establish a clean identity foundation

Review sign-in names, verified domains, mailbox addressing, account matching, and privileged identities before broad synchronization or cutover. Problems that are tolerable in one directory become harder to diagnose when several systems make different assumptions about the same person. Give each identity attribute a clear source of authority and a defined change process.

Use groups for access, licensing, and policy targeting where appropriate, with naming standards, owners, and lifecycle rules. Organizational units and existing GPO scope do not translate directly into an Entra group model. Map the business purpose behind each structure rather than carrying its historical shape into the new environment.

Keep administrative identities distinct from ordinary user accounts. Identify service accounts and application identities separately so their dependencies are not hidden in a general user migration wave.

Separate synchronization from authentication

Connect Sync and Cloud Sync are provisioning choices. Password hash synchronization, pass-through authentication, and federation are sign-in choices. Evaluate both against supported scenarios and operational requirements rather than assuming the synchronization product determines the authentication method.

Password hash synchronization supports cloud validation. Pass-through authentication validates through on-premises agents and AD, while federation relies on a separate trusted authentication service. Their availability dependencies differ. Document what happens when the on-premises network, agents, federation infrastructure, or domain controllers are unavailable. Microsoft’s hybrid authentication guidance provides the comparison.

Account authority needs its own migration plan. Do not stop synchronization or change object ownership casually as a shortcut to cloud management. Use the supported process for the specific object and scenario, with a pilot that tests updates, access, and recovery.

Test password reset and strong authentication together

Password hash synchronization and password writeback solve different problems. A synchronized password hash supports sign-in; password writeback supports approved password changes or resets being written to the on-premises directory. Describe those flows explicitly rather than calling the arrangement “two-way password sync.”

Pilot self-service password reset with registration readiness, the relevant license and configuration, password policy behavior, and support procedures in view. Test a normal reset, an unsuccessful reset, and the help-desk escalation path. Users need clear instructions before their familiar recovery process changes.

Modernize authentication with supported phishing-resistant methods and deliberate exception handling. A biometric gesture alone is not a complete description of an authentication method; review the actual credential and sign-in flow that protects the account.

Move devices and policies by an evidence-based wave

Windows registration, hybrid join, and Entra join have different purposes. Choose a target model for each device population and confirm its application access, user profile handling, management enrollment, and compliance reporting. Device identity and Intune enrollment are related decisions, but they are not interchangeable.

Rationalize GPOs before moving settings into cloud management. Identify obsolete policies, conflicting settings, and controls whose business purpose is still required. Use supported policy analysis and settings tooling to plan the replacement, then test enforcement and rollback on a small group.

The original deck’s broad statement that Macs cannot join Entra ID should not be used as current guidance. Microsoft now documents macOS Platform SSO and supported Entra join scenarios. Review the OS, enrollment, Company Portal, and MDM requirements for the intended deployment. Microsoft’s Platform SSO overview is the starting point. Choose Intune or a supported Apple management integration against the actual workload and support model, rather than assume Windows join behavior applies unchanged to macOS.

Stage access controls and maintain a recovery path

Introduce Conditional Access with explicit scope, report-only assessment where supported, and a controlled move to enforcement. Confirm the availability of MFA registration, compliant device signals, and emergency access before a policy becomes a production dependency. An access restriction should have a tested operational recovery process.

Reduce standing privilege and use just-in-time elevation where supported. Track the exceptions that remain and the owner responsible for removing them. Security operations should know how to recognize abnormal administrative sign-ins and who may act on them.

Inventory app registrations, enterprise applications, API permissions, credentials, and owners. Use managed identities where the application and hosting scenario support them. A migration is a useful point to remove unowned access, but it is also a point at which a forgotten integration can interrupt a business process.

Prove a complete wave before expanding

A migration wave should include identities, devices, applications, policies, users, and support staff. Define the exit criteria before the pilot: successful access to required applications, usable password recovery, correct policy enforcement, an understood exception list, and a tested rollback or recovery plan.

Expand when the team can demonstrate those outcomes and explain the failures it found. Keep legacy dependencies visible until they have been replaced and verified. Leadership needs a clear account of which dependencies remain, who owns them, and what decision enables the next wave. That is a more useful measure of progress than the number of accounts synchronized.
